Exeter City v Blackpool Preview
Exeter City and Blackpool will both be looking to bounce back from opening-day defeats when they meet at St James Park on Saturday.
Exeter began their League One campaign with a 1-0 loss away to newly promoted Doncaster Rovers. The Grecians struggled to create chances in that match, managing just two shots and spending much of the game on the back foot.
Blackpool also started with a defeat, going down 3-2 at home to Stevenage. The Seasiders, however, could count themselves unlucky not to take at least a point. They pushed hard late on and created enough opportunities to suggest they will be dangerous again this season.
Last season, Blackpool won both league meetings between these sides. They were also strong away from home, collecting 35 of their 67 points on the road. In fact, their away form was one of the best in the division, and they scored 37 goals in 23 away games.
Exeter’s lack of threat in the final third at Doncaster will be a concern for manager Gary Caldwell. If they cannot find more attacking spark, they may face another tough afternoon. Blackpool’s travelling record, combined with their scoring power, gives them the edge going into this game.
A repeat of last season’s away success looks possible. Blackpool’s pace in attack and ability to score on the road could see them take control early. If they defend solidly, a 2-0 win for the visitors is a realistic outcome.
The Tangerines will be aiming to get their first points of the campaign and keep up their good record at St James Park, while Exeter will need to find more creativity if they are to stop them.
